Dr. Joshua “Josh” Tayloe

Born on November 25, 1934, in Washington, North Carolina, Dr. Josh Tayloe was the son of Dr. Joshua Tayloe and Mary Ann Jamison Tayloe. He attended public school in Washington before graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957. He earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1961.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday November 30, 2024, at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, officiated by Rev. Chris Adams and Deacon David Crabtree.

The family will receive friends following the service in the parish hall at the church.

He maintained a lifelong connection with UNC through the Alumni Association. He was a dedicated member of the National Development Council, the Chancellor’s Club, the Medical Foundation, the Co-Founders Club, and the Loyalty Fund.

Dr. Josh completed his internship at the Medical College of South Carolina Teaching Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, followed by a residency in OB/GYN and a teaching fellowship from 1961 to 1966. From 1966 to 1968, Dr. Josh served in the United States Army Medical Corps at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where he was Chief of the OB/GYN Division.

In 1968, he returned to Washington, North Carolina, to practice OB/GYN, where he enjoyed a career alongside Drs. McCray Jones, Juno Brantley, and Brenda Peacock. He was a valued Beaufort County Medical Staff member and served as Chief of Staff in 1970. He was also an active member of the Pamlico Albemarle Medical Society, the OB/GYN Society, and a Fellow of the American College of OB/GYN and the American Medical Association. Each day he spent practicing medicine brought him fulfillment, and he found enormous joy in helping bring new lives into the world.

Dr. Josh’s dedication to his community extended beyond medicine. In the 1980s, he served on the Washington School Board and volunteered alongside his wife, Carol, at John Cotten Tayloe and Eastern Elementary Schools. He was a lifelong member of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church, serving three terms on the Vestry, including as Senior Warden, and participating in numerous committees. For 12 years, he and Carol taught high school Sunday school together.

His devotion to God, family, UNC, and the Pamlico River guided Dr. Josh’s life. Although he always claimed to have been bad at golf, tennis, and dancing, he loved and excelled at all three. He was devoted to caring for people in his community and found immense joy in delivering their children and their children’s children! He was a man of humor and warmth, and he and Carol created a home filled with laughter, compassion, and generosity.

After retirement, he cherished spending time with Carol. His deep love for her was ever-present:  “Carol—my love—my life. I enjoyed every moment with her!”

Josh was predeceased by his father, Joshua Tayloe; his mother, Mary Ann Tayloe; his sister, Ann Tayloe Kivett; and his daughter, Beth Szymeczek.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Tayloe; his daughters, Elizabeth (Greg) Pope, Sarah (Tom) Bulla, Athalia (Bruce) Watson, (Jim) Szymeczek, Anne (Jim) Pagnani, Dr. Meghan (Scott Burnside) Tayloe; his grandchildren Dr. Joshua Keais(Anna), Liza (Nathan), Charlotte (Taylor), Joshua, Mary Anne (Gus), Emily, John Cotten, Mark, Matt, Zack (Hannah), Suzy, and Mia; and great-grandchildren Libby, Peter, Whitney, and Joshua.

The family especially thanks his caregivers, Carol Everett, ECU Health and Hospice, and Cypress Coast Care.
