CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Members of the Beaufort/Hyde Special Olympics took part in the second biggest state-level competition for Special Olympics in North Carolina.
The Fall Tournament was held Nov. 21-23 in Charlotte and Concord. It featured athletes participating in seven different sports: bocce, cycling, golf, roller skating, soccer, softball and tennis. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in different categories for each competition.
Eight athletes from the Beaufort/Hyde Special Olympics took part in bocce, a game that is thousands of years old. The object of the game is to roll their bocce ball as close to a small white ball as they can in competition with other teams.
The Beaufort/Hyde teams included:
— Lacey Lynn Allen, Allen Wayne Brickhouse, Kelton Rydell Columbus and Britani Alexa Slade (Beaufort Krabbie Patties). They won the bronze medal in Bocce Team.
— Gary S. Newman and Greg Sadler (Beaufort Sweet G’s). They won a silver medal in Bocce Doubles.
— Elizabeth Michelle Willis and Jonathan Willis (Beaufort Willis & Willis). They won a silver medal in Bocce Doubles.
Back in February, Beaufort/Hyde Special Olympics announced two new bocce courts were being built in Washington. The courts were made possible through donors who contributed money to have them built. This is the first state event athletes were able to participate in after those courts were built.
