The Washington Daily News confirmed Tuesday night that Matt Taylor, the head football coach at Washington High School, has stepped down from his position.
WCTI-TV’s Brian North broke the news Tuesday morning. He reports that Taylor will return to D.H. Conley High School as a teacher. North also reports that Taylor wants to spend more time with his wife and children, which he has praised many times for their support while he coached football.
Washington Pam Pack Football Coach Matt Taylor confirmed he has stepped down. He says it was one of the toughest decisions he’s ever made but it was all about family and his young kids. Taylor lives in Winterville. He is a Conley graduate and served roles as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator there before taking the Washington job.
Taylor was 7-14 overall in his two seasons with the Pack, going 3-7 in 2003 and 4-7 in 2004. Washington lost to Wallace-Rose Hill in the first round of the 2004 Class 2-A state football playoffs.
Taylor took the Washington job after Perry Owens resigned in May of 2023 to return to his hometown, Edenton, and to serve as an assistant coach for the Aces.
