The Washington Chess Club hosted the non-rated “Wide Open” chess tournament on Saturday, Nov. 23 at their clubhouse on East 15th Street. The chess tournament was open to all ages and all skill levels featuring eight rapid games (10 minutes per player per game). Fourteen players from all over eastern North Carolina participated, with local chess playing teenager Avanni Richardson the winner.
The Washington Chess Club will also be host to the John Wehrenberg Memorial Tournament on Jan. 10, 2025 in honor of its long-time member. Co-sponsored by the Wilson Chess Club, this will be a United States Chess Federation rated tournament.
The Washington Chess Club meets every Monday night beginning at 7 p.m. and usually ending around 9 p.m. All are welcome to come and participate. Text club secretary Charles Moseley at 252-333-9359 for more information.
