Pungo Christian splits with Parrott Academy

BELHAVEN, N.C. — Pungo Christian’s varsity boys and girls split Thursday’s home contest with Parrott Academy.

Pungo’s girls welcomed back Allison Sawyer, who was recovering after tearing both of her ACLs, and rallied for a 45-43 win, handing Parrott its first loss of the season. Pungo’s boys had a hard time dealing with Parrott’s press defense and fell 60-36.

Pungo’s girls (2-8) trailed 9-2 early but slowly chipped at the deficit and took the lead before halftime. Lily Keech hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Raiders a 26-24 lead with 2:12 left in the half. Although Parrott took the 27-26 halftime lead, the Raiders rallied again.

Keech nailed a jumper to give PCA a 28-27 lead. Sawyer converted a 3-point play after making a basket then hit another layup for a 35-27 lead. The Patriots (6-1) cut Pungo’s lead to 45-43 after a 3-point basket by Caroline Stocks but the Raiders ran out the clock.

Sawyer led Pungo with 18 points while Julia Rouse had 12 and Keech added 11.

In the boys’ game, Pungo had nine first-quarter turnovers as Parrott’s pressure defense presented all kinds of problems. That put the Raiders (4-5) in a 21-5 hole after the first quarter, a deficit they were never able to overcome.

Michael Ricks had nine points while Luke Rouse had eight for the Raiders.
