GREENVILLE, N.C. — Northside’s flag football team not only wrapped up the Big 12 Conference East regular-season title last Saturday but they are also one of the favorites to win the Big 12 Conference tournament title, which will be played Saturday in Greenville.

The Panthers went 3-0 in games played last Saturday at West Craven High School. Northside beat Havelock in the first game to break a tie in the regular-season standings. The Panthers then beat West Craven and New Bern to wrap up a 9-1 record.

Northside will be one of the teams playing in the conference championships this Saturday in Greenville. Washington (7-3) and Southside (0-10) are scheduled to meet in one of four first-round games to be played at the ECU North Recreational Complex. The winner of that game faces North Pitt, also a top seed.

The other two top seeds are Havelock and Ayden-Grifton. Each of those four teams gets a first-round bye.

A successful season will wrap up Saturday with some uncertainty involving the sport. There’s no denying the popularity of flag football in the area. However, the NC High School Athletic Association chose not to sanction the sport for the 2025-26 school year. Over 100 schools around North Carolina play the sport. Ashley High School in Wilmington recently won an unsanctioned state title.
