As the holiday season progresses, Beaufort County Animal Services is reminding residents to adopt responsibly and remember that animal ownership is a lifelong commitment.

While some people may dream of finding a puppy or kitten under the tree on Christmas morning, animals should not be surprise gifts. Make sure all parties involved in the adoption process understand the commitment that a new pet requires. Depending on the animal, that that commitment can extend as long as 20 years.

“Every year we see people adopt animals during the holiday season, and then by January the owners bring them back to the shelter because the bond isn’t there, or they just aren’t able to care for the animal. These returns are devastating for the animals,” said Animal Services Manager Melanie Sawyer.

Animal Services educates and works with potential adopters to determine if animal adoption is right for them, and which animals would be the best fit for their household. In some circumstances, if a potential adopter already has another pet, a time can be arranged for the owner’s animal and an adoptable animal to meet and see how they interact with each other.

Here are a few things to consider before adopting:

  • If you live in an apartment/rental home, does your landlord allow pets?
  • Is anyone in your house allergic to animals?
  • How would the addition of an animal to your home affect your lifestyle and daily routine? Do you foresee any major changes to your routines that may impact your ability to care for a pet?
  • Have you considered if an older pet would be best for your house? Some older pets can be more suitable, calmer and may be housebroken.
  • Can you make a financial and emotional commitment to the pet for the next 10-20 years?
  • Do you have a veterinarian in mind? If not, you’ll need to find one to provide medical care to your pet.

The Beaufort County Animal Shelter is open 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and by appointment on Saturdays. The Shelter is located at 3931 Highway 264 East in Washington. You can call the Shelter at 252-946-4517.
