Carly Woolard didn’t know just how good she would be at flag football. But she found out quickly.

The junior was the quarterback for the Washington Pam Pack, who finished fourth in the inaugural season in the Coastal Big 12 Conference. What helped in her success in many ways was her softball talents, meaning she could take many of those skills and transfer them to football.

Now, Woolard is hopeful for the reverse … meaning that flag football helps her softball game. Last season, she batted .478 with 33 hits, 25 runs, 22 RBI, 10 doubles, four triples and two home runs.

Woolard talked about the flag football season, what she learned, and how she prepares for the upcoming softball season.

  1. Let me ask you first what the flag football season was like for you. You’re keeping your arm warmed up for the softball season?

“I think it was a really good season. It was unexpected, like all the stuff. I didn’t really know what was going on.

“I was still trying to figure it out. I still don’t know exactly what I’m doing. So I’m really excited for next season so we can really start getting down pat. I’ll be working on it for the season also. But it’s been really good, really interesting, kind of stressful, but it’s been really fun.”

  1. What’s some of the things that you took from this?

“It’s maybe a little bit more mentally strong. I get really frustrated sometimes, especially being quarterback. I feel like there’s a lot of weight on me to throw the ball. Even if they don’t catch it, it still kind of looks bad on me. But it really is trying to acclimate to all the new things, the weather, learning new stuff, learning new mechanics with my arm.”

  1. You finished fourth for the season. Talk about getting this far. You beat North Pitt in overtime then lost to Northside.

“That was very stressful also, but yeah, it was really exciting. I was a little worried there for a little bit, but we pulled through. It was really exciting. I really wish we could have won that game (against Northside), but we’re coming for Northside next year.”

  1. What’s the things you learned the most about the flag football season? Your coach is also your softball coach so you’re already working together.

“Honestly, the throwing mechanics have helped me a lot. There’s definitely things I can take from the throwing and add to my softball that are going to help me a lot. I went to a softball camp, and actually it put two and two together. It helped me a lot. I feel like it helped me moving around, being able to focus on more than one thing at a time because there’s a lot going on in front of me. But I think it’s going to help me. We’ll see, though.”

  1. So what’s next? You switch from football right away to softball. You’ve got the Christmas break, too.

“It’ll be right back to softball workouts. I’m sure (Washington softball coach) Brad (Horton) will send out a text message. But, yeah, it’ll be right back to locking in on softball, for sure.
