Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

My first knowledge about how great a person Dr Fred Howdy is was in Bartow Houston’s book. He left it in my locker after a game in which
Manteo stomped us at Williamston High School.

A classic example that I wish to bring up is that every Thursday morning he eats with his children . Ricky, David and Katherine all eat with their Dad at Shep’s Grill on Thursday morning, usually about 7:00 a.m. He comes in with Ricky and stays until they leave. He is an avid poker player and plays at the Washington Yacht and Country Club. He is 93 years old with a good mind.

I did know how friendly he is. He doesn’t ever walk by the table and forget to speak to us. Jack Mitchell was in there eating his breakfast after he broke his leg one morning and Dr. Howdy hadn’t seen Jack in over two months. He pulled a chair and spoke to him, asked how he was doing and how was feeling after such a freak fall .That was mighty kind!

Dr. Fred Howdy wasn’t my dentist, Dr. Zeno was. The example he set for his kids was the example that every parent should set. The example that every one has a purpose in life, that Dr. Fred Howdy portrays is important. That is why I read the book in less than two hours on the way to Williamston. Dr. Fred Howdy wasn’t a good man, he’s a great man! We need more Dr. Howdy’s in our town!

They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, N. C. The Original Washington!
