Starting at 5 p.m. today, a winter storm warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) will go into effect for Beaufort County and surrounding counties. The warning will continue through 7 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Heavy snow is expected, NWS reports. Total snow accumulations are predicted to be between four and six inches.

“There is high confidence we will see accumulating snow across all of Eastern NC starting after sunset tonight and lasting through tomorrow morning. Blowing and drifting snow is expected, and brief blizzard conditions are also possible, especially along the Outer Banks.”

Drivers should be aware that roads, and especially bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous. Slippery road conditions are expected for Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511. Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary,” the NWS said.

“Confidence remains high that extremely cold weather will last through Thursday, with morning lows in the teens and wind chills in the single digits at times. Any snow that melts during the daytime will refreeze into black ice at night, prolonging hazardous travel conditions,” the NWS reported.
