Former Southside High star earns third straight CIAA honor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Southside High School graduate and Fayetteville State sophomore KaNyah O’Neal has picked up another honor from the CIAA.
O’Neal has been chosen as the league’s Rookie of the Week. It’s the third straight week and fifth for the season where she has earned the honor.
O’Neal scored 22 points, grabbed four rebounds (two offensive), dished out five assists and collected two steals. She was the second leading scorer for Fayetteville State against Claflin University, where she also had a big steal and assist in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 47-47. She hit the three-pointer to give the Broncos the lead 52-50, which they maintained throughout the rest of the game.
She was the team’s leading scorer in a 68-66 loss to Livingstone. The loss dropped the Broncos to 12-7 overall, 7-3 in the CIAA Southern Division. O’Neal finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
For the season, she’s now averaging 7.4 points and 2.9 rebounds.
