An estimated 700 students from Beaufort County schools are expected to attend the 25th-annual Dan Windley Environmental Field Days this week at Goose Creek State Park.

Ten schools, including four teams from John Small Elementary School, were represented at the event.

Dan Windley was instrumental in the development of Goose Creek State Park and heavily involved in other environmental activities.

The event is sponsored by the Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District, with support from Goose Creek State Park officials and the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.

Workshops on a variety of topics ranging from soil science to marine life were available.

Becky McRoy, education coordinator for the Beaufort Soil and Water Conservation District, led workshops throughout Tuesday. She noted that her topic had shifted somewhat from previous years.

“I have a presentation on general principles of water conservation, but now information on wetlands has also been included. The hope is that students will take some of the information they learn here and apply it to their daily lives,” she said.

Students moved through a rotation of stations during the day. The event is structured so students from all participating schools may visit all stations by the end of the week.
