WILLIAMSTON — After rushing for over 2,000 yards and 26 touchdowns this season, Williamston star running back Emery Griggs is now running in a new direction - South.
The 2008 Washington Daily News Football Player of the Year will be taking his hard-hitting act to the next level as he signed up to play for Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA. on Wednesday in front of his friends and family at Williamston High School.
Griggs, who led the Tigers to a 10-6 record and a trip to the NCHSAA 1-A championship game, said the campus atmosphere along with the Bulldogs’ success on the gridiron was a big lure.
The Bulldogs won the JUCO title in 2001, and were national runners up in ’02 and ’05. Griggs played linebacker, quarterback and running back for Williamston this season, and his versatility impressed GMC coach Bert Williams.
McGill said Griggs’ athleticism will help him earn more time on the field.
Griggs said he chose GMC because he, and the school, believes it can develop him into a Div. I football player.
Coach McGill feels Griggs is more than capable of achieving that goal.
Griggs will have to adapt to the military life style presented by the school. The senior said he will miss North Carolina, but that his football experience will help him adapt to his new digs.
