GREENVILLE – The East Carolina Pirates conducted their second official spring workout with a two-hour practice Thursday afternoon at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
After beginning camp with a pair of introductory workouts in shorts and helmets, ECU Head Coach Skip Holtz and his staff will direct the Pirates’ first full-pad session Friday afternoon.
ECU continued to stress positional basics throughout Thursday’s workout, which was held in near-perfect conditions with temperatures in the low 70s. Although they spent the majority of the practice keying on traditional individual work, the Pirates moved to a crisp pass skeleton drill in the later stages which featured all four returning quarterbacks on ECU’s active roster participating in short-to-mid-range passing exercises with the unit’s running backs, tight ends and receiver corps against linebacker and secondary personnel.
“The last two days in shorts are similar to our first five days of preseason camp,” Holtz said. “There’s a lot of energy, a lot of running around with everyone trying to get acclimated. Undoubtedly, the spring is a time to learn. There’s no depth chart and we’re just rolling with everyone, trying to improve the pieces of the puzzle – not the big puzzle itself. On the other hand, I’m anxious for us to put on pads so we can do more team work and start playing football from a physical and fundamental standpoint.”
East Carolina will take the weekend off after Friday’s first full-gear practice before returning to work next week with sessions Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
