DEEP RUN — Jones Wilbert “JW” Smith, 82, of 3222 Perry Blizzard Road, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. JW was born in Duplin County on January 15, 1927 and moved to Deep Run. After graduation JW was drafted into the Army where he worked in the Army post office in Osaka, Japan. After an honorable discharge in 1946 he came home, married Hazel Riggs, and farmed until retirement. In November, 2008 they celebrated their 62nd anniversary. The couple was active in Deep Run OFWB Church and the Cornerstone Sunday School class. JW was preceded in death by his parents Luther and Eula Smith, in-laws Webster and Estelle Riggs, sister Edna Noble, granddaughter Amanda Smith, and brother-in-law Daniel Riggs.
Funeral services, officiated by Rev. Josh Whitfield and Rev. Adrian Grubbs, will be held Friday, March 27, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Deep Run OFWB Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service, as well as other times at the home. Interment services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston. Pallbearers are Billy Smith, Warren Hill, Emmett Smith, Carlton Jenkins, Scotty Dawson, and J. B. Blizzard.
JW is survived by his wife Hazel Smith; children Brent Smith and wife Darnell of Aurora, Buster “J W” Smith and wife Ann of LaGrange, Nelson Smith and wife Gail “Peachy” of Pink Hill, Gary Smith and wife Donna of Warsaw; sisters Essie Herring of LaGrange and Katheryn Jane Smith of Kinston; sisters-in-law Happy Taylor of Deep Run and Jean Riggs of New Bern; grandchildren Stephanie Smith of Washington, Jeremy Smith of Kinston, Heather Brock of Clinton, Nichole Smith of Pink Hill, Andy Smith of LaGrange, and Jessica Smith of Warsaw; and five great grandchildren.
