Washington’s season came to a halt on Friday as they fell 30-6 to Currituck in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs.
The seventh-seeded Pam Pack (5-6) hoped it would get a strong boost by the return of junior quarterback Jimmy Williams after he sat out several weeks with a broken nose and a concussion, but that was not the case against the No. 2 Knights (8-3).
The courageous Williams played only a handful of snaps before sustaining an injury, which sidelined the dual-threat QB for the rest of the game.
With Williams out, freshman quarterback Patrick Thompson, who suffered a head abrasion with under two minutes to go in the team’s regular season finale last Friday, came off the bench for Washington.
On a cold and extremely windy night, the Pam Pack got a first quarter score by freshman running back Trey Spruill as he dashed into the end zone from 25 yards out.
After that, the Currituck defense was able to keep Washington out of the end zone for the rest of the contest.
After the game, Washington coach Sport Sawyer praised his team for a good effort this season.
“I’m proud of these guys for their character and heart,” Sawyer said. “They are good young men. Everywhere they went they showed class and represented Washington well.”
