The second-annual Darleen’s Flamingo 5K Run had 154 participants brave the wind and cold to cross the finish line Saturday.
The real winner of the event was the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center Foundation and its programs and services.
From ages 9 to 68, runners from places such as Cary, Kitty Hawk and Morehead City joined area runners.
McKinley Gray, a 16-year-old boy from New Bern posted a time of 18:41, taking the overall title.
The event is named in honor of Darleen Smith, a cancer victim. Money raised by the event benefits the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center Foundation. Priscilla Smith and Nicki Klapp, two of the event’s organizers, explained what they hoped people received by participating in the event.
“We wanted to support the Shepard Center and awareness for breast cancer,” said Smith.
“Getting people like Down East Entertainment providing DJ service and Bobby Lane from V103.3 emceeing takes some time. It takes a donation of three hundred or more dollars to make the sponsor list,” Klapp said.
