Mrs. Emily Bateman Brickhouse, age 81, a resident of Austin Point Drive, Washington, died at her home on Tuesday evening April 21, 2009.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday April 25, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Washington officiated by Dr. Michael Price and Pastor Steven Pipho. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Ched Beckwith, Mike Brickhouse, Chris Furlough, Ray Moore, Jim Bateman and Charles Beckwith will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Brickhouse was born on May 28, 1927 in Beaufort County on the family farm “Somerset.” She was the daughter of the late Robert Midgette Bateman and Margaret Dean Simpson. She was a graduate of Bath High School and was a retired hairdresser. On August 11, 1945, she married Milan “Brick” Brickhouse who survives. Mrs. Brickhouse was a founding member of Hooker Memorial Christian Church in Greenville. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Washington where she served as a Deacon, was active in CWF and a member of the Trinity Bible Class. She was a member of the D.A.V., Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and a member of Woodmen of the World. Mrs. Brickhouse was one who gave more than she took. She was a woman of charity, loved gardening , her home and her family.
The family would like to express their appreciation to those at the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, Acera Hospice and Tar Heel Home Health. The family also extends their thanks to the church members, friends and neighbors who attended to her physical and spiritual needs, and the caregiverers at Beaufort County Medical Center.
In addition to her husband “Brick” of the home, she is survived by her children: Deanne Beckwith and her husband, Col. (R) Charles Beckwith of Norfolk, VA and Gene Brickhouse and his wife, Holly of Woodstock, IL; her grandchildren: Ched Beckwith, Emily Becher, Gina Mandros and Michael Brickhouse; her great grandson: Michael Becher; her brother: Allen H. Bateman, Sr. of Washington and her sister: Sybil Pipho of Lake Gaston, NC. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers: Daniel Bateman, William Bateman, Judson Bateman, Robert Bateman, and her sisters: Nan Bateman and Lillie Patterson.
The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Friday April 24, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home in Washington.
