Trimane Goddard is hoping to make the most of a “Giant” opportunity next week.
Though he was disappointed that he didn’t get selected in last weekend’s NFL Draft, the former Roanoke High School and North Carolina Tar Heels’ star is getting a chance to make an NFL team. Goddard, a 5-11, 198-pound safety, will have a tryout with the New York Giants.
Nothing is definite yet. If Goddard has a favorable showing, the Giants can sign Goddard to a free-agent deal.
Goddard, who tied for the national lead with seven interceptions last year, will go through his tryout during the team’s mini-camp, which will be held May 8-10.
Goddard earned numerous honors his senior season with the Tar Heels. He was named to the 2008 Associated Press All-America Second Team, 2008 Walter Camp All-America Second Team, 2008 Rivals.com All-America Third Team, 2008 SI.com All-America honorable mention and All-ACC First Team.
He had 54 tackles, five pass break-ups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
Goddard believes he has what it takes to play in the NFL.
