Mark “Louis” Smith, 81, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went to be with the Lord Friday, May 8, 2009, at his home in the Ponzer Community. He was the son of Mark N. Smith and Lula S. Smith of Deep Run.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy. In Lenoir County he was an “Outstanding Young Farmer” of 1957, a member of several civic organizations, and a member of the Lenoir County School Board. He was also a substance abuse and court counselor at Lenoir County Mental Health and later at Tideland Mental Health Center in Swan Quarter. His crowning achievement to his wife and his family were the last 40 years of sobriety achieved through the miracle of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was a mentor to many who sought sobriety. He enjoyed crabbing at Lake Mattamuskeet, deer hunting, watching sports, and listening to his wife play the piano.
Survivors are his precious wife, Fleda H. Smith; “son” Blue Smith of the home; Mark Louis Smith Jr. and wife Joanne of Florence, SC; John “Jack” C. Smith and wife Cathy of Greenville; Wesley P. Smith and wife Shelia of Washington; daughters, Amy S. Howard and husband Billy of Grifton and Lesley S. Melvin and husband Burnice of New Bern; grandchildren, Bobbi S. Nutt and husband David; Wesley Smith Jr. and wife Lisa; Joel Smith and wife Jenni; Geoffrey Smith and wife Sandra; Matthew Smith and wife Pamela; Joy Smith Perez and husband Jose; Kristen S. Hill and husband Jamie; Luke Smith, David Smith, Catherine Smith, Zach Melvin, Christopher Smith, Brooks Howard, and Will Howard; and great-grandchildren, Katie and Ann Francis Nutt, J.W. Hill, and Kolbey Smith; sister, Ellen Tyndall of Deep Run; sisters-in-law, Hazel H. Smith and Anne J. Smith of Deep Run, and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 11, 2009 at First Baptist Church of Smithton, 2951 Seed Tick Neck Road, with Rev. Matthew Smith and Rev. Jack Smith officiating.
Visitation will be held at other times at the home, 259 Smith Road, Belhaven, N.C. 27801, in the Ponzer Community.
Throughout his illness, Louis exhibited his unwavering faith in and love for Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.
