Mrs. Ruth Phelps Davenport, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed on to the peace of her Lord at 95 years of age on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at Chowan Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Edenton surrounded by her loving family.
Born July 25, 1911 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late James Arthur and Mary Bateman Phelps and was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart McCoy Davenport; daughter, Nina Ruth Davenport; sons, Carlton M. Davenport and Wayne Davenport; sisters, Sally P. Stillman, Carrie P. Jethro, Emma P. Snell, Ruby P. Collins, Arthur Mae Davenport and brother, Romey Phelps. Mrs. Davenport was a homemaker and attended Creswell Baptist Church. She was active in the Ladies Home Demonstration Club and Washington County Senior Citizens Center.
Her family includes her daughters, Alice D. Phelps of Windsor, N.C. and Dr. Annetta D. Davenport of Cedar Point, N.C.; sons, Stewart “Ranny” Davenport of Creswell, N.C., James “AJ” Davenport of Yukon, OK, Glen D. Davenport of Columbia, N.C., Douglas R. Davenport of Camden, N.C. and Julian R. Davenport of Va. Beach, VA; sister Leola P. Ambrose of Columbia, N.C.; nineteen grandchildren and thirty-three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Creswell Baptist Church with Rev. Joseph Cockrell officiating. Burial will follow in the Davenport Family Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her son Ranny Davenport.
