Residents warned of scams

Area residents need to be aware of scams this holiday season.

During the past two weeks, a number of scams have been reported to the Hyde County Sheriff’s Office.

“People need to be aware of telephone numbers that have area codes that are not valid, calls from business that you do not do business with, and calls from anyone wanting access to your computer and/or private information,” reads a news release from the sheriff’s office. “These scammers are using technology that can’t be traced. Everyone needs to check their caller IDs and don’t give anyone access to your computer desktop or your personal information over the phone, including your bank accounts. When using your computer to shop online, make sure that you see ‘https’ in the address bar. If anyone suspects a scam report it to your local law enforcement agency.”
