Mrs. Shirley S. Turner of Washington, N.C. died Monday, July 6, 2009 at Ridgewood Manor.
Funeral service will be conducted Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Mt. Hebron Church with Bishop Aaron McCarter officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Shirley Stevenson Turner was born December 7, 1937 in Grimesland (Pitt County), North Carolina to the late Robert Thurston and Velma House Stevenson. She departed this life on July 6, 2009. She attended the former Pitt County Training School, now known as G.R. Whitfield School. Shirley moved to Beaufort County with her family where she continued her education in the Beaufort County Schools at Washington Colored School and P.S. Jones High School. She was a member of St. Monica Missionary Baptist Church when she was in Pitt County. She later joined Mt. Hebron Disciples Church when she relocated to Beaufort County where she served with the Senior Usher Board. She moved to New York in the late 1950s where she worked for the famous musical artist Quincy Jones for several years. It was New York where she met and married Joe Turner. She returned to Washington when her health began to fail.
The siblings who preceded her home to Glory are one sister, Annie Davis and four brothers, Robert, Bernard, Clinton and Eugene Stevenson.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Daisy Johnson (Donnie) of Washington, N.C.; three sisters, Daisy S. Brewer of Philadelphia, Penn., Theresa Ward and Eltha S. Booth (Ed) of Washington, N.C.; two brothers, Grover (Vernice) and Oliver (Betty) Stevenson of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be Friday July 10, 2009 from 1-6:30 p.m. at Leon Randolph Memorial Chapel and also visitation at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Ed and Eltha Booth, 1122 VanNorden Street, Washington.
Arrangements are by Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 West Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Washington.
