Tim Martin has what he calls the “want to” — that insatiable desire to pursue his dream.
Martin, a metalworking artisan from Sidney, Ohio, learned his craft in the early 1990s.
He left his job in the spring of 1992, becoming a self-employed maker of brass-and-copper decorations.
For roughly 20 years, Martin has been traveling the country, attending 40 to 50 arts and crafts shows a year, plying his wares on a full-time basis.
Asked what advice he’d give to other people intent on chasing their dreams, he was direct: “If they’ve got the want to — it’s all about the want to.”
Martin was one of about 43 artists, craftsmen and artisans in attendance Friday at the Beaufort County Arts Council’s annual Holiday Arts & Craft Show.
“A good number of them are new vendors,” said Joey Toler, executive director of the arts council.
The show began Friday, and will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. today at the Washington Civic Center, 110 N. Gladden St.
The arts council suggests a $2-per-person donation for admission to the show.
By noon, the vendors had finished assembling their displays and begun interacting with customers.
“They come with everything they need,” said Toler, adding most of the sellers are professionals in their fields.
“It’s very Christmasy,” Toler said, gesturing to the decor.
Arnold Barnes attended the show with his wife, Glenda.
“I like to see what the craftsmen have taken out of the raw and made into something of beauty that we can put in our home,” Arnold Barnes said. “It’s just beautiful. It’s all beautiful work.”
