Dr. Charles H. Byrd, Sr., age 70, a resident of 109 Mallard Creek Drive, Washington, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at Beaufort County Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, August 13, 2009 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service with The Rev. Charles J. Schwidde officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at Hillside Funeral Service.
Dr. Byrd was born July 31, 1939 in Mt. Olive, NC to Luby Harper Byrd, Sr. and Anne Geneva Gentry. Charles was a graduate of Duke University where he received his PhD. Dr. Byrd was the founding president of Beaufort County Community College and past president of Stanly County Community College in Albemarle, NC. He was currently employed as the Executive Director of Pitt County Council on Aging.
On February 3, 1970 Charles married Linda Woolard Byrd who survives. He is also survived by one son, Charles H. Byrd, Jr. of Washington; one brother, Luby Harper Byrd, Jr. of Mt. Olive; one nephew, Craig Byrd and wife, Beth of Goldsboro; one niece, Kelly Byrd of Mt. Olive; and one brother-in-law, Roger Woolard of Washington.
