Area roundup: Jones picks off pass in win|Daniels, Haywood score touchdowns

Jamont Jones, last week’s South Atlantic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, helped lead Lenoir-Rhyne to a 42-0 win over Davidson in Saturday’s college football action.
The former Washington Pam Pack star came up with his first interception of the season, returning it for 13 yards.
Jones, a sophomore for the Bears, also had two tackles and one punt return for 4 yards.
Jones, a special teams standout, has seven kickoff returns for 242 yards (34.6 average), which includes a 94-yard return for a score, and two punt returns for 8 yards (4.0 average). The starting defensive back also has one interception, eight tackles and one blocked kick.
The Bears (2-1) play host to North Greenville in a 7 p.m. game next Saturday.
TRAVIS DANIELS
Travis Daniels, held in check one week ago, gave UNC-Pembroke the lead with a 13-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. That helped the Braves top Wingate, 24-13, on Saturday.
The former Washington Pam Pack star finished with 97 yards rushing and the one score on 14 carries. The sophomore had a long run of 37 yards.
For the season, Daniels has rushed for 349 yards and three scores on 50 carries (6.98 average). He also has four catches for 46 yards.
The Braves (3-0) play at Carson-Newman in a 1 p.m. game next Saturday.
C.J. WILSON
C.J. Wilson, a former star at Northside High School, had five tackles for East Carolina in Saturday’s 35-20 loss to West Virginia.
The senior defensive end recorded one tackle for loss.
For the season, Wilson has 13 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss.
He has 21.5 sacks, 37 tackles-for-loss, 22 quarterback hurries and 146.5 tackles in his career.
The Pirates (1-1) play at North Carolina in a noon game next Saturday.
GREG PALMER
Greg Palmer, a former star at Northside High School, had 12.5 tackles for Chowan in Saturday’s 27-24 loss to Brevard.
Palmer, a senior co-captain for the Hawks, had two tackles-for-loss (5 yards) and one fumble recovery.
For the season, Palmer has 19 tackles, one sack (11-yard loss) and one fumble recovery.
The Hawks (0-3) play Elizabeth City in the annual Down East Classic at 4 p.m. in Rocky Mount next Saturday.
BRYAN HAYWOOD
Bryan Haywood’s 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter helped lift North Carolina Wesleyan to a 24-17 win over Salisbury University on Saturday.
Haywood, a former star at Southside High School, led the Bishops with 66 yards rushing on 14 carries. He had a long run of 11 yards.
Haywood also had three catches for 31 yards, including a 16-yard gain.
For the season, Haywood has 105 yards rushing on 23 carries (4.6 average) and a touchdown. The senior also has four receptions for 31 yards and one kickoff return for 24 yards.
Wesleyan (1-1) plays at Emory &Henry College in a 1 p.m. game next Saturday.
WILLIAM HUNT
William Hunt, a former star at Plymouth High School, played for Fayetteville State in the Broncos’ 30-20 win over Bowie State on Saturday. The freshman defensive tackle did not record any tackles.
For the season, Hunt has four tackles.
The Broncos (1-2) play at St. Paul’s in a 4 p.m. game next Saturday.
KENNETH HYMAN
Kenneth Hyman, a former star at Roanoke High School, had one tackle for the Quakers in Guilford’s 20-19 loss to Methodist.
For the season, the sophomore starting cornerback has two tackles and two pass breakups.
The Quakers (0-2) play host to Averett in a 7 p.m. game next Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY
JESSICA ROGERS
Jessica Rogers, a former star at Washington High School, and her N.C. A&T teammates participated in Saturday’s Elon Cross Country Invitational.
The sophomore finished in 73rd place in a time of 23 minutes, 3 seconds.
The Aggies return to action Friday in the Reebok Wolfpack Invitational in Cary.

Danielya Whitney had four kills and one dig for Pitt Community College in a recent win over Lenoir Community College.
Whitney, a former standout at Southside High School, is a freshman middle blocker for the Bulldogs.
Pitt (4-3) plays at Guilford Tech Community College on Wednesday.

MARISSA SMITH
Marissa Smith, a former standout at Washington High School, has appeared in two games for the Methodist Monarchs.
The freshman forward and her Meredith (1-3) teammates return to action Sunday for a 2 p.m. match against Washington and Lee University.
JEANNA BUCK
Jeanna Buck, a former standout at Washington High School, has played in all three games for the Peace soccer team this season. The freshman defender/midfielder has started in one of those games for the Pacers.
Peace (0-3) plays Sunday at Emory &Henry College in a 2 p.m. game.
