CHOCOWINITY — When Joshua Sheppard zipped a penalty kick past the Camden goalie, it tied the game and gave the Southside Seahawks confidence heading into halftime.
However, the Seahawks weren’t able to build off that momentum, eventually falling 3-1 to the Bruins in Monday’s Four Rivers Conference opener. Despite the loss, Southside coach John Lohman was proud of his Seahawks (4-1, 0-1), playing in just their second year of soccer, for going toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the area.
“I feel like we matched them pretty well,” Lohman said. “We made a couple mistakes with balls and they were able to capitalize. They have a lot of soccer history so they’re going to be able to do that kind of stuff.
“We had plenty of opportunities in front of their goal. It’s not like it was a one-sided game. Overall, I’m pleased with the game.”
The Bruins jumped out to a 1-0 lead within the first 90 seconds of the game. Southside settled down and eventually tied it at 1-1 on Sheppard’s penalty kick, coming with less than three minutes to play in the first half.
The Bruins took a 2-1 lead 13 minutes into the second half when a player knocked in a shot moments after goalie Billy Harding made a nice stop.
Harding sprawled out to stop a shot. However, the ball trickled away and a Bruin player was in front of the net and pushed it in for an easy goal.

About 15 minutes later, the Bruins tacked on an insurance goal.
Southside returns to action Wednesday at Manteo.
