Voters in Aurora have an opportunity at 7 p.m. tonight to meet, greet and quiz the town’s two mayoral candidates — W.C. Boyd Jr. and Clif Williams — during a one-hour election forum scheduled for the Community Center directly behind Town Hall.
The mayor’s race is the only contested municipal election this year in Aurora. Other Town Council seats match up perfectly with the pool of municipal candidates.
Aside from the moribund economy, which is a nationwide ailment, hot-button issues in Aurora are few and far between this election season. The area’s biggest employer, PCS Phosphate, recently kicked back into high gear after state and federal regulators issued permits to allow mining for the next three decades. That is good news for local merchants and businesses.
Jeff Aydelette, editor of The County Compass, is optimistic town residents will take advantage of a chance to hobnob with the candidates in a reasonably informal setting.
“We expect this to be a fun and low-key affair,” said Aydelette. “We are most appreciative that the town is allowing us to use its splendid facility. Clif and W.C. are friends, and they are excellent candidates too. We hope to have a large turnout.”
Admission is free. Those who attend will be invited to submit questions for the candidates and to engage the candidates about any problems or concerns they may have.
Voters may e-mail questions to info@thecountycompass.com. For more information about the forum, call The County Compass at (252) 745-3155.
Editor’s note: The Washington Daily News and The County Compass, a new newspaper serving Pamlico County and the Aurora area of Beaufort County, entered into a partnership in which The County Compass will provide the Daily News some of its articles about the Aurora area and the Daily News will provide The County Compass with selected articles, including sports stories about Southside High School.
