Computer classes scheduled

The Division of Continuing Education at Beaufort County Community College has scheduled nine classes this spring to help participants improve their knowledge of computer operations and programs. The classes to be offered are as follows:

  • Introduction to Computers and Microsoft Office 2010: 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 10 and ending April 24 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 93-hour class, specifically designed for seniors, will cover a variety of topics including a brief overview of all Microsoft 2010 applications — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access. Students will receive a brief introduction to the hardware and software components of computers as well as information on buying computers. The instructor, Lisa Evans, will also cover topics related to Internet security settings and Internet fundamentals. The registration fee is $175. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Advanced Excel: 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 10 and ending Feb. 28 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour class will expand on the topics covered during a previous Beginning Microsoft Excel class. Topics will include creating, sorting, and querying tables, using templates, working with formulas, PivotCharts and PivotTables and the use of SmartArt. The instructor, Lisa Evans, will also cover macros and the use of Visual Basic for Excel. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Computer Security: 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning Jan. 10 and ending Feb. 28 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour class will give students a thorough overview of computer security. Topics to be covered include malware, computer viruses, spam, phishing, and email hoaxes. The instructor, Lisa Evans, will also discuss such topics as detecting and countering malware and spyware as well as using your browser to surf the web safely. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Keyboarding and Word Processing: 1 to 4 p.m., on Thursdays, beginning Jan. 12 and ending March 1, in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour class is designed for individuals who need to learn to use the computer keyboard and who need help in learning word processing. Through various projects, students will learn to type and design basic documents such as memos, letters and reports. Students will also learn the basics of table design and the use of graphics to design documents. The instructor is Lisa Evans. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Social Media Techniques: 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Jan. 12 and ending March 1 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour class will give students information on the use of social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Twitter. Instructor Lisa Evans will cover target audiences, rules of engagement, blogs, podcasts, webinars, e-books, discussion boards, and mobile computing. Students will also learn about sharing videos, photos and other images. Evans will also show students how to develop social media monitoring tools and a social media marketing plan to promote a business or activity on social media outlets. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Electronic Commerce: 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning March 13 and ending May 1 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour course will introduce students to electronic commerce, also known as e-commerce. Instructor Lisa Evans will discuss selling and marketing on the Internet, business-to-business strategies, and online auctions. Students will also receive information on security, payment systems, and planning. Legal, ethical, and tax issues will also be discussed. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Better Presentations and PowerPoint 2010: 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning March 13 and ending May 1 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour course will be packed with useful information on making better presentations. Students will be introduced to Microsoft’s PowerPoint 2010 and will create a presentation using transitions and visual aids such as clip art, sounds, and hyperlinks. The instructor is Lisa Evans. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Introduction to the Internet: 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays beginning March 15 and ending May 3 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour course will introduce students to the basics of Internet browsers and basic communication using email. Students will learn to “surf the web” and will learn about Internet security, and security for wireless networks. Instructor Lisa Evans will discuss user-generated information on the Internet as well as basic information for creating web pages. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Integration Applications: 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays beginning March 15 and ending May 3 in Room 822 of Building 8. This 24-hour course will give students a chance to develop seven projects using various Microsoft Office 2010 programs. The first project will be developing a Word document; the second, a presentation using PowerPoint; the third, a spreadsheet using Excel; the fourth, a project using all three programs. A fifth project will use Microsoft Publisher; a sixth, Access, and a seventh, Outlook. The registration fee is $65. A $5 technology fee will also be charged. The registration fee may be waived for one course per academic semester for students 65 years old and older. The technology fee applies to all students.
