HAVELOCK — One week after having to contend with West Craven multi-talented quarterback Justin Hardy, the Pam Pack defense got another dose of sheer athleticism from Havelock quarterback Danny Webster.
Webster certainly didn’t disappoint. The junior ran for two touchdowns, threw for another and accounted for over 300 yards of offense in leading Havelock (6-1, 3-0) to a 29-10 win over Washington (3-4, 1-2) in Friday’s Coastal Conference action. The Rams, ranked ninth in the latest N.C. Prep Football Poll, gained some revenge on the Pack after Washington knocked off Havelock twice last year, including a 34-25 setback in the first round of the state playoffs.
“Danny Webster is a very good athlete, and they have some good schemes and some good coaches,” Washington coach Sport Sawyer said. “They got us tonight.
“I think our guys played hard and made some good plays, but they made more plays than we made.”
The loss was Washington’s second straight. A key drive by the Rams to end the first half certainly played a big part in that.
After Justin Griffith picked off a Trey Harris pass, the Havelock defender returned it 35 yards to midfield with 40 seconds to play. Webster hit R.J. Bryant with a 14-yard gain, then found Daniel Baily for a 27-yard hookup to get to the Pack 9-yard line. Following a spike to stop the clock and a 4-yard run by Webster, Andretti George capped the five-play, 50-yard drive with a 5-yard burst off the left side. Tyler Cooper’s PAT gave the Rams a 13-3 lead.
The Pack had moved to the Havelock 44, thanks in part to the arm of Harris. However, his interception, coming after he threw the ball beyond the line of scrimmage (Havelock declined the penalty), helped the Rams get a key score before the half.
“That was big for them,” Sawyer said. “That’s one of those things where we’re learning as an offense. We were just trying to make things happen and I like that, but that was a huge momentum swing for them.”
Washington’s only score of the first half was a field goal by Hatteras Brooks. Havelock held a 6-3 lead thanks to a 71-yard TD toss from Webster to Jarrell Wallace prior to the late score.
Webster’s foot helped the Rams get on the scoreboard early in the second half. His 57-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line. Kashief Foreman was tackled in the end zone for a safety, giving the Rams a 15-3 lead.
The Rams went up 22-3 on a 2-yard run by Webster. The key play came on Webster’s 16-yard toss to Andrew McCamish on fourth-and-2 at the Washington 18. A 12-yard run by Webster, and a 15-yard penalty against the Pack for a late hit, also helped sustain the drive.
Washington pulled within 22-10 early in the fourth quarter. Harris hit Johnny Broadway with a 41-yard strike on the final play of the third quarter. Broadway did a nice coming back to snag the high-arching aerial. A 21-yard pass to William Ellegor and a 12-yard run by Harris also helped set up the touchdown. Harris zipped a bullet to Tony Turnage, who made a nice snag in the end zone for a 6-yard score.
However, the Pack wouldn’t threaten again and Webster’s late 1-yard TD plunge sealed it.
“We have to start making a few more plays,” Sawyer said. “We’re playing hard, but we have to make more plays.”
The Pack returns home next Friday to face White Oak on Homecoming.
