Allen Hobbs recorded the hat trick, scoring all three of Southsides goals in a 3-0 win over Gates County on Wednesday.
Southside (8-5, 4-4 Four Rivers Conference) returns to action Monday at home in a 6 p.m. game against Perquimans. (WDN)
Pack soccer drops third straight
The Washington Pam Pack soccer team fell 1-0 at West Craven on Tuesday.
It was the third straight Coastal Conference loss for Washington. Tuesdays loss was also the second consecutive time the Pack didnt find the net.
Lamberto Gomez scored in the 38th minute for the Eagles (10-4-1, 4-4-1), who celebrated their first win over Washington.
The Pack (8-8, 4-5) plays host to Havelock at 6:30 p.m. today. Washington beat the Rams 6-2 earlier this season.
After trips to White Oak on Oct. 20 and D.H. Conley on Oct. 22, the Pack plays its final home game Oct. 27 against South Central. The regular-season finale is Oct. 29 at West Carteret. (WDN)
Southside spikers sweep
The Southside Seahawks earned a three-game sweep of the Roanoke Redskins in Tuesdays Four Rivers Conference volleyball action.
Southside (13-7, 6-6) posted a 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 win.
Caitlin Bogart and Atyana Starkie each had three kills for the Seahawks. Bogart had nine block assists, while Nikki Hodges had seven and Starkie six.
Kristen Ayers served up 15 points, while Bogart had nine. Starkie and Becky Poole added seven service points apiece.
Southside plays host to Williamston today on Senior Night. Seniors Caitlin Bogart, Kristen Ayers, Becky Poole, Jessica Taylor and Danyelle Jedlicka will be honored. The match begins at 5:30 p.m.
Southside ends regular-season play Tuesday at Northside. (WDN)
Demons win third straight
The P.S. Jones Demons earned a 42-0 win over Hertford County II in Wednesdays middle school football action. Kareem Toppin got the Demons started with a 71-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff.
Fullback C.J. Cobb scored twice, while Stevie Green, Marques Spencer and Daniel Mulsberry also scored.
Caleb Jones led the defense with 16 tackles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries.
The Demons (3-2) play at Roper on Tuesday. (WDN)
Knox an All-America Scholar-Athlete
Meredith Knox, a former star at Washington High School and a senior on the Anderson Trojans softball team, was named a NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete.
The All-Academic Teams were chosen based on the GPAs submitted for the 2008-09 school year. Through the program, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) honors high school and collegiate softball teams for their success in the classroom.
Knox had a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. (WDN)
Belhaven basketball signs ups
Belhaven Recreation Department Basketball Sign Ups will be held Oct. 16 thru Nov. 20.
Age groups are 7-9 and 10-12, based on the childs age as of Jan. 1, 2010.
The cost is $40 for town residents and $45 for out of town residents.
Sign ups may be made at the Belhaven Municipal Building or the Charlie Smith Community Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday, or from the Belhaven website www.belhavennc.us (Recreation). Mail completed form with fee to the Town of Belhaven, Recreation Department, PO Box 220, Belhaven.

Boys and girls basketball league set
St. Clairs Church of Christ will host a youth boys and girls basketball league for kindergarten through sixth grade. Registration will be held now through Nov. 7, and late registrations will be accepted through Nov. 14 with a $5 late fee.
Registration is $54 per child (shorts are optional for an extra $11) and can be mailed to St. Clairs Church of Christ, 9814 NC Hwy 99 South, Bath, NC 27808.

East Carolina Angels seeking players
East Carolina Angels are looking for kids interested in playing some 12U Travel Softball. The Angels already have 8U, 10U and 14U teams that are highly successful.

Open house set for volleyball club
East Carolina Junior Volleyball Club (ECJVC) is a travel volleyball program for girls ages 11-18. Girls interested in improving their level of play, who are motivated and desire a competitive atmosphere should consider trying out for ECJVC.
ECJVC is a member club of USA-Volleyball Carolina Region, organized and run by local parents and coaches. There are opportunities to tryout for regional teams that play mostly in North Carolina, and national teams that travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic US and play in national tournaments. (WDN)
ECJVC will hold an Information OPEN HOUSE on Sun., Oct. 18, from 3-4 p.m., for prospective and returning players. The Open House will be held at Courtside Athletic Club, 1750 Wimbledon Dr., Greenville. Please bring a folding chair.
