Mrs. Elizabeth Taylor Davenport, age 93, a former resident of 2785 Camp Leach Road, Washington, NC died Sunday November 1, 2009 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Washington.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday November 4, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington officiated by Cleve Edwards and Chris Hux. Burial will follow in Pamlico Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Davenport’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mrs. Davenport’s nephew Charlie Ray Davenport and elders and deacons of Athens Chapel Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Davenport was born in Beaufort County on December 11, 1915 daughter of the late Joe John Taylor and the late Lizzie Ann Wells Taylor. She married Julius David Davenport, Sr. on December 30, 1933 who preceded her in death on February 21, 1999. She and her husband operated a family farm on Camp Leach Road and they were foster parents for the Beaufort County Department of Social Services, caring for fifty seven foster children in their home. She worked at the Bath School lunch room until her retirement in 1983. Mrs. Davenport was a member of Athens Chapel Church of Christ where she was a member of the Ladies Aid circle # 1 and a former member of the Beaufort County Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include a daughter: Nora Guirkins and her husband Rudolph of Washington, their children: David Sikes, Vida Cutler and Elaine Tigchelaar; A daughter: Anna Dunn and her husband Linwood of Stokes, their children: Tandy, Carl, Lane and Lin Dunn; a daughter: Luette Cuthrell and her husband George of Washington, their children: Sam and John Cuthrell; a son: Julius Davenport, Jr. and his wife Eunice of Alachua, FL, their children: Julie Johnson and Jason Davenport; Dwight Davenport and his wife Jan of Washington, his children: Nickie Asby and Beth Baily and a son: Vance Davenport and his friend Corinna Cox of Bath and his children: Connie Woolard, Brandon, Joshua and Dakota Davenport; two sisters: Virginia T. Godley of Chocowinity and Betty T. Jones of Morehead City; two half sisters: Louise Taylor Edwards of Washington and Joyce Tuten English of Salisbury, IN; seventeen great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by a grandson: Lee Sikes, two brothers: Joseph E. Taylor, Sr. and Melvin R. Taylor; a sister: Mary Louise Taylor; a half sister, four half brothers and three infant sons.
The family received friends 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday November 3, 2009 at Paul Funeral Home of Washington and at the home of Mrs. Davenport’s daughter Luette Cuthrell located at 2636 Camp Leach Road, Washington, NC.
