Carl McCray scooted into the end zone in overtime, helping the No. 9 Plymouth Vikings stun previously unbeaten and top-seeded Manteo, 18-12, in Friday’s second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A state playoffs.
The Vikings (9-4) and Redskins (12-1) were tied 6-6 after the first half and 12-12 after regulation.
Manteo, which had beaten Plymouth 42-12 on Oct. 30, was kept out of the end zone by the Vikings in overtime. The Vikings, having the ball second, scored on McCray’s run for the winning points.
The Vikings will travel to No. 4 seed Wallace-Rose Hill (11-2) in next week’s third round. The Bulldogs blasted Williamston 49-6 in Friday’s second-round game.
The No. 5 seeded Tigers, last year’s 1-A state runners-up, finished with a 10-3 record.
Creswell falls
The previously unbeaten Creswell Tigers, the No. 2 seed, were upset by No. 7 seed North Edgecombe on Friday night. The Warriors (8-4) romped to a 40-6 victory.
Danvonta Phelps scored on a 1-yard run for Creswell’s lone score.
The Tigers finished the season with an 11-1 record.
