The Plymouth Vikings will face the Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldogs in tonight’s third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association state football playoffs.
The No. 9 seed Vikings (9-4) are coming off an 18-12 overtime upset of previously unbeaten and top-ranked Manteo. That came after the Redskins posted a 42-12 win over Plymouth just three weeks earlier.
The Vikings posted a 37-6 win over Jamesville in the first round.
Freshman Carl McCray, Elmer Cooper and Calvin Norman have run the ball effectively for the Vikings, while quarterback Kevin Purkett can throw the long ball.
The No. 4 seed Bulldogs (11-2) ran away with a 49-6 win over Williamston last week.
Wallace-Rose Hill crushed Northampton-East, 46-0, in the first round.
Top rushers for the Bulldogs are Bobby Crawford (902 yards, seven scores, Devonta Herring (897 yards, 13 scores), Omar Carr (771 yards, 12 scores), Derrick Dunn (368 yards, four scores), Jonathan Drakeford (118, yards, one score) and Dawan McKinzie (104 yards, three scores).
McKinzie is also 42 of 86 (47.5 percent) passing for 857 yards, throwing six touchdowns and three interceptions.
Bobby Crawford leads the team with 11 catches for 305 yards and three touchdowns. Herring has 10 catches for 246 yards and a pair of scores.
Jose Flores has been solid as the Bulldog kicker. Flores has converted 33 of 40 PATS while adding a pair of field goals.
The winner faces either No. 6 seed Jones Senior (9-4) or No. 7 seed North Edgecombe (8-4) in next week’s Eastern Regional championship game.
The 1-A state championship game will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Wake Forest University’s BB&T Field.
