Undermanned but not undetermined, the Washington swim team annihilated the competition on Saturday as it took first place all the boys and girls events to set a school record.
Competing with only seven girls against White Oak and Croaton, the Pam Pack stood tall in all 22 events.
“It was amazing,” Washington coach Spencer Pake said. “We talked to the team before the meet and told them that because of the numbers each of them would have to step up. … Hopefully this will give us some momentum heading into our next meet (today at New Bern).”
In the boys competition junior Brandon Niederhauser broke his own Pam Pack records by swimming a :22.2 in the 50-meter freestyle and a :49.7 in the 100-meter freestyle.
Freshman Luke Harris stepped up and nabbed first place in the 100-meter back stroke with a time of 1:16, while York Winstead took first in the 100-meter freestyle.
Another highlight of the boys’ meet was the first place effort of the 200-meter freestyle relay team (Harris, Winstead, Will Davis and James Martin).
Making a splash in the girls’ meet was freshman Michaela Daniels whose time of 1:23.34 was tops in the 100-meter breast stroke. Fellow freshman Kaitlyn Richard swam a 1:10.03 to win the 100-meter back stroke, while Jessie Howard earned first in the 200-meter freestyle by swimming a 2:26.33.
Emily Pfeiffer also had a big day for the short-handed girls’ squad as she won first in the 100-meter fly and the 100-meter freestyle events.
