Top 10 stories for 2009 selected

The Washington Daily News presents the local Top 10 stories of 2009, beginning today and ending Sunday.
During that five-day period, two of the Top 10 stories will appear each day. Today, the No. 10 and No. 9 stories appear. The remaining Top 10 stories will then appear in ascending order, with the No. 2 and No. 1 stories appearing Sunday.
Washington Daily News employees nominated stories for the Top 10 list, submitting more than 30 stories for consideration. Later, employees ranked the nominated stories, resulting in the Top 10 list.
Among the stories that did not make the list were the following:
• Controversy over selecting the former P.S. Jones High School location as a possible site for a new police station in the city.
• Record enrollments at Beaufort County Community College for the spring and fall semesters for 2009.
• Moratorium imposed to protect spawning fish halts the driving of piles for the U.S. Highway 17 bypass bridge over the Tar River for several months
