Mrs. Mary Griffin passed away on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, at the Vintage Inn in Williamston. She had been in residence at Vintage Inn for 18 months.

Mary Evelyn Carrow Griffin

A native of Chocowinity, she was born on Aug. 25, 1911, the daughter of Sophie Hill Carrow and Samuel Henry “Tobe” Carrow. Her mother died when she was only 18 months old at which time she moved to Pinetown to live with her Aunt Mary Carrow Jefferson. Growing up in Pinetown, she worked in her Uncle Charlie’s mercantile business. She married John Alfred Griffin, a farmer in Martin County on Feb. 7, 1932.

Mary worked as a homemaker and was the mother of three. Her life focused on family and home. She was an excellent cook, homemaker, and mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was especially thoughtful and remembered family and friends’ special days. In her later years, she was known for her gracious and grateful ways. She asked little for herself and wished the best for all. She always enjoyed a good laugh, even if it was on her. As our family reflects on Mary, we smile and remember her kind face and sweet hugs.

She was predeceased by her son Johnny Gray Griffin and her husband of 50 years, John A. Griffin, and her half-sister, Virginia Carrow Sawyer. She is survived by her daughters, Jean Griffin Rogers and husband Gene of Williamston; and Mike Griffin Nelson and husband David of Santa Rosa, Calif. She also was the grandmother of three: Jeanie Rogers Sessoms of Winston-Salem, Lauri Rogers Williams and husband Tom of Fairview, and Richard E. Rogers Jr. and wife Hunter of Raleigh; and was great-grandmother to five: Mary, Griffin, Paul, Jackie, and Jon Douglass.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Biggs Funeral Home.
