Balanced Panthers top Seahawks|Southside girls cruise

YEATESVILLE — Using a balanced offensive attack and some solid free throw shooting in the fourth quarter, the Northside Panthers captured a 61-52 victory over Southside in Friday’s Four Rivers Conference game. Southside’s girls prevailed, 65-45.
Nathan Cahoon paced the Panthers (6-10, 2-5) with 14 points. Taylor Woolard (11 points), Calvin Cox (11 points) and Isaiah McCullor (10 points) also hit double digits for Northside.
Cahoon had the hot hand early, scoring seven points in the first quarter as Northside jumped out to a 15-12 lead. The Panthers pushed their lead to eight, 29-21, at the half.
McCullor got inside for a couple easy baskets and Cahoon drilled a couple long distance shots, helping Northside increase its lead to 46-29 heading into the fourth.
Southside (6-9, 2-5) tried to rally, getting as close as 50-42 after four straight points by Jordan Benston (11 points). A three-point play by Woolard and another layup by McCullor extended the Northside advantage to 57-45, staving off Southside’s late burst.
Willie Ruffin added 11 points for Southside.
Southside plays three games next week, beginning with a home game Tuesday against Manteo. After traveling to Camden on Wednesday, the Seahawks play host to Plymouth on Friday.
Northside will be on the road next week, traveling to Perquimans on Tuesday and Camden on Friday.
SOUTHSIDE GIRLS ROLL
Southside used a 15-0 first quarter and a 15-0 run to start the fourth to cruise past Northside, 65-45.
Southside coach Bill Lake said the hot start proved to be more negative than positive.
The Panthers (9-7, 2-5) used a 10-2 run to start the second quarter, pulling within 17-10. The Seahawks (12-2, 5-2) answered with a 9-0 spurt in grabbing a 26-10 lead. Northside rallied once again, closing within 28-17 at the half.
Elizabeth Harris, who scored 8 points for Northside, hit a triple late in the third that pulled the Panthers within 42-36.
However, Southside responded in a big way, using a 15-0 run to pull away.
Quaneika Thomas, who led Southside with 14 points, hit some clutch baskets during Southside’s fourth-quarter run.
Katisha Hyman added 13 points and Tamisha Credle 11 for Southside.
Bonney and Davis led Northside with 9 points apiece.
JV BOYS
Southside’s junior varsity boys took a 62-18 win. Rakeem Miller had 11 points and Derick Cannon 9 for the Seahawks (9-3, 5-2) in the win.
