Mr. Lewis Murchison Dibble, age 81, a resident of 171 Hilltop Lane, Washington died Thursday February 18, 2010 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday February 20, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverends Danny Allen and Susan Harrison. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Marshall Singleton, Muriel Moore, Harry Tubaugh, Earl Bonner, Ron Pledger, John Morgan, Horace Waters, Todd Galloway, and Ashley Winburn will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Dibble was born on July 28, 1928 to the late Andrew Comstock Dibble and the late Lucille Murchison Jackson Dibble. Mr. Dibble was a native of Orangeburg, S.C. and graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1945. He later graduated from Clemson University in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering.
On March 19, 1955 he married the former Louise Tomlinson who preceded him in death on July 14, 1996. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael C. Bailey of Costa Rica in 2000. She is survived by her granddaughter, Janet Bailey Calderon, her husband, Eliecer Calderon and their three children, Christopher, Jonathan, and Jennifer, also of Costa Rica. He later married Mrs. Lucille Edwards Carowan on April 10, 2004, who preceded him in death on November 6, 2006. She is survived by her four daughters, Gladys Carowan Howell, Clarissa Carowan Phillips, Mary Carowan Mertz and Martha Carowan Zito.
Mr. Dibble’s brother Andrew Comstock Dibble, Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and his wife Mary also preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Alexander Jackson Dibble and his wife, Joyce of Orangeburg, S.C. and Robert Buford Dibble and his wife Shirley of Orangeburg, S.C. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dibble actively served the First United Methodist Church as Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Administrative Board, Trustee, as well as numerous other boards and as a long-standing usher. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He was a member of the East Carolina Engineers Club, has been registered as a Professional Engineer of N.C. since 1959, and was inducted into the prestigious Fellow of Professional Engineers of North Carolina in May 2004. The plaque reads “For longstanding and faithful service to his Creator, his community, his fellow man, and the Engineering Profession.”
The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. Friday February 19, 2010 at his home. Mr. Dibble will lie in state at Paul Funeral Home until 12 noon on Saturday.
