Betty Joyner Gray, 82, of 202 Inda Way, Washington, and formerly the Epworth Community in Craven County, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at the Beaufort County Medical Center.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, February 19, 2010 at Epworth United Methodist Church, 205 Honolulu Road, Vanceboro, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. at the church.
Mrs. Gray was born May 8, 1927 in Vanceboro, NC, and was the daughter of the late Howard B. and Mary Hill Joyner. She attended Craven County Schools and graduated in 1944 from Farm Life High School in Vanceboro, where she was a member of the school’s tennis team. On July 4, 1946, she married Richard Hadley Gray, who survives.
Mrs. Gray was employed for 20 years as a clerk/typist at the Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point. A life-long Methodist, she was a long time member of Epworth United Methodist Church and was active in church affairs, serving as church treasurer for some 35 years. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women and it brought her great joy to be named a life member of that group.
Survivors include: her husband of the home; son, Richard H. and wife, Betty Mitchell Gray, of Washington; brother, John F. Joyner of Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Epworth United Methodist Church, 205 Honolulu Road, Vanceboro, NC 28586.
