Washington is an inviting place. The grandeur of downtown’s historic buildings, the abundance of majestic homes and the natural beauty of the Pamlico River combine to create a magnetic draw.

For all of its physical charm, Washington has much more to offer. Its people are as welcoming as its views, I’ve discovered, as my family has settled in to our new home these past few weeks.

Whether a simple introduction by handshake and smile, or invitation to a church, civic club or community event, I appreciate all those who have extended their hospitality. It offers a glimpse of what makes this community such a great place.

Last week, the Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce passed out honors at its annual membership banquet. Some of our finest local businesses and individuals were recognized for their achievements and contributions to the community.

Among those honored was Alma Friedman. She racked up 3,200 points in a system used to measure involvement as a chamber ambassador. Her scorecard looks pretty good, but her true value as an ambassador extends well beyond the ledger.

Ms. Alma is simply a pleasant person, a smiling face that’s greeted me at nearly every event or function I’ve attended in my early days here.

There are many more like her. And I’ve enjoyed the introductions.
