Thomas Vance Jones, 79, of 1695 North Lake Road, Fairfield, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.
Born in Hyde County, October 7, 1930, he was the son of the late Roland L. and Inez Starnes Jones. He attended N.C. State University after completing high school, later served in the U.S. Army and in the Army Reserves; was a member of the Fairfield United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent for more than 30 years, farmed for more than 40 years and later worked with the U.S. Postal Service as rural carrier for 20 years and retired in March, 2008. He served his community and county as a member of the Hyde County Board of Commissioners, a member of the ABC Board, the Fairfield Drainage District board.
Mr. Jones’ “extended family” is acknowledged with gratefulness as The Fairfield Coffee Crowd, Community Home Care and Hospice, The Post Office “family” and Pat Spencer.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Fairfield United Methodist Church. Pastor Valerie Ballance and Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairfield Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce Ballance Jones; a son, Vance Jones of Manteo; two daughters, Rita J. Franklin of St. Matthews, SC and Lisa Jones of Manteo; a daughter-in-law, Dolly Jones of Manteo; two grandsons, Gunner Jones and Dillon Jones both of Nags Head.
Tommy was preceded in death by a brother R. L. Jones who died as a child and a sister, Margaret J. Killebrew who died in July, 2009.
