In a public meeting I have no problem with the person giving the prayer naming the deity to whom he or she prays. Would the caller and everyone else be OK with Muhammad or Allah or the many other deities in the world that people believe in?

On your readers’ poll in the Feb. 5 edition of the Washington Daily: I think you need a telephone number there because all of us don’t have computers. I don’t think the Democrats are going to hold the office of the governor much longer in North Carolina. I hope not, anyhow.

Unfair, unjust and what is even worse, a new tax on employee commuter ferries is counterproductive. From the courthouse to the state house to the White House, all politicians campaign about bringing in jobs. Here we have people who actually have a job and use a commuter ferry to go back and forth to work, and a first-time, new tax will become effective in April for these people. On the other hand, the state spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to entice companies to come to our state with the promise of new jobs. On the farm, we said, “A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush.” Rethink this bad legislation.

The way I understand it, President George Washington avoided visiting the first town named for him during his Southern tour in the 1790s. One has to wonder if the town had been promoted back then as “Little Washington” if he might have swung out this way to check out the vibe.

I think Tuesday’s Sound Off was correct. There is a lot of ageism going on. It is the old versus the young, the young versus the old. I’ve noticed that of late.

Why is it that FEMA is holding its mitigation get-together in Chocowinity at night? Wouldn’t it make sense to have it in Washington, at a large place like the Civic Center during the day? This is a hardship for many senior citizens and handicapped people who have to travel at night to a place like Chocowinity. Personally, I don’t travel to Chocowinity.

To the caller who walks where the ducks and geese congregate: Oh, for Pete’s sake, leave the beautiful ducks and geese alone. That is their natural habitat. There is miles and miles of places to walk in Beaufort County. Just find another spot.
