BELHAVEN A huge game from catcher Allison Armstrong wasnt enough as the Pungo Raiders fell 23-15 to the Northeast Eagles in Thursdays Tarheel Independent Conference softball action.
Armstrong ripped four hits, including a triple and two doubles. The senior also drove in six runs.
Shes my go-to hitter, Pungo first-year coach Melody Jo Williams said.
Tess Smithwick banged a pair of doubles as she continues to swing a hot strick for the Raiders.
Tess always gets on (base) and always gets good hits, Williams said. Allison comes around and just smashes the ball. Shes really dominating right now.
Pungo (1-6, 0-5) appeared to be in cruise control after batting around and scoring 10 times in the second.
However, the Eagles were able to rally. Northeast used a seven-run sixth inning to take control.
Williams isnt giving up on her team.
They have to want it themselves, Williams said. Until they want it, and until they realize that they can do it, its not going to happen.
While Pungo wont play again for nearly two weeks, Williams is hoping her Raiders can improve greatly before the next game.
Were going to continue to work on the little things, she said.
