Marion Ruth Hodges Sloan, age 83, a resident of 196 Washington Harbor, Washington passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at UHS Inpatient Hospice.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in Oakdale Cemetery with The Rev. Danny Allen officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at the home of her son, Lewis Sloan, 107 Mallard Drive, Washington, NC.
Mrs. Sloan was born in Washington, NC on November 6, 1926 to Thaddeus Hinton and Virginia Lewis Hodges. Marion graduated from Washington High School and Louisburg College. She helped establish Sloan Insurance Agency in 1950 and worked with the agency until 2007. She owned All Seasons Children’s Clothing Store as well. She loved Downtown Washington and all it has to offer. Marion was a member of First United Methodist Church, Washington and the Linda Titus Circle. She served on the board of Beaufort County Medical Center. Marion loved having lunch with her Holly Rust Girl Scout Troop of 1939. For many years she was active in the Washington Women’s Club and helped open and operate the hospital canteen. She dearly loved her family; they were the light of her life.
She is survived by her sons, Thomas Michael Sloan and Lewis Swindell Sloan and wife Sarah all of Washington, grandsons, Lewis Swindell Sloan, Jr. of Raleigh, and Edward Ferrell Sloan of Washington, her sister, Jean Hodges Waters of Stanleyville and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Lloyd Preston Sloan, III, and her sisters, Virginia Hodges Gerard and Elizabeth Hodges Watson.
The family wishes to thank her loving caregivers Katie Jackson and Betty Barr, The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, Dr. Jennie Crews, Beaufort County Medical Center and the angels at University Health Systems Inpatient Hospice House for their wonderful care.
In lieu of flowers the family would like to request that memorial gifts be made to the New Horizon Building Fund, First United Methodist Church, 304 West Second Street, Washington, NC 27889.
