Traffic stop yields arrests

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said two men were arrested Feb. 9 during a traffic stop on Mill Road in Chocowinity.

Jermaine Adarryl Haywood, 39, of 2637 Windmill Road, Chocowinity, and Columbus Blackwell Jr., 63, of 90 Sams Road, Chocowinity, were arrested after K-9 Elza, the sheriff’s office drug detection K-9, alerted to the odor of a narcotic during the stop. A subsequent search of the vehicle and the two men turned up 28 grams of marijuana packaged for resale in several plastic baggies, $700 in cash, 10 grams of crack-cocaine and powder cocaine mixture, and a set of digital scales, according to a press release.

“Investigators had received information that Haywood was involved in distribution of controlled substances,” said a representative of the narcotics unit.

Both Haywood and Blackwell were arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Haywood was also charged with maintaining a vehicle to facilitate drug activity.

According to the narcotics unit representative, Haywood has prior felony assault convictions with no prior drug convictions, while Blackwell has been convicted previously on drug charges.

Both men were confined the Beaufort County Detention Center: Haywood under a $4,000 secured bond; Blackwell, under a $2,000 secured bond.
