On April 28, two things will be happening in downtown Washington — on the waterfront, no less. The Harbor District Alliance and the Beaufort County Arts Council are teaming up to provide a festival combination of all things music and marine with the Marine Market sprawling across Stewart Parkway and the BoCO Music Festival camped in Festival Park.

The festivities are slated to run from 8 a.m. (Marine Market kicks things off) until 10 p.m. (BoCO Music Festival ends it). Last year, the two events ran separately, spaced two weeks apart. This year, the organizers of the two events decided to consolidate the two, to expand the audience and widen the range of events, activities and products for that audience.

The WHDA, promoting the economic health of the downtown business district, and the BCAC, promoting the cultural health of city and county, should be congratulated for taking the lead — disparate organizations working together for a common purpose. More people drawn downtown means more people will purchase goods from either vendors at the event or the downtown businesses. More people exposed to the arts and the role BCAC plays in the community means more support for the nonprofit as a whole. It’s a win-win situation.

So, mark your calendars. On April 28, stroll down the waterfront to buy a new boat, or a piece of art, or listen to some great music. Or do all three.
