Special night at Pam Pack game
The annual Trent Watkins Award will be presented to two Washington High School players prior to Friday’s Washington Pam Pack baseball game.
It was also be Youth Baseball Night at the game. Those youths, accompanied by parents, who go to the game wearing their jerseys will be admitted free.
The Pam Pack seniors will also be honored at the game. Washington plays D.H. Conley at 7 p.m. (WDN)
Smith signs with Pirates
GREENVILLE — Tony Smith, a former high school standout at Greenville’s J.H. Rose High School, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play basketball at East Carolina University, head coach Jeff Lebo announced Wednesday.
Smith, who has spent the last two seasons at Seward County (Kan.) Community College, ranks 38th on the Rivals.com list of top 150 junior college players.
“We are very excited about Tony becoming a part of our basketball program,” Lebo said. “He brings a lot of versatility to our backcourt positions. He is a very significant signee for us because not only is he a local kid and our first signee, but a local kid that elected to come home.”
The 6-foot-5, 185-pound Smith averaged 14.3 points, 6.5 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 26 games this past season. He led Region VI in assists per game, ranked seventh in steals and 10th in scoring. (ECU)
Knights cruise to victory
The Terra Ceia Knights cruised to a 17-0 win over Northeast in three innings to wrap up regular season play.
Katie Jackson, Paige Roberson and Kennedy Dail each had two hits for the Knights.
Morgan Boyd (8-5), who fanned six in two innings, got the win. Roberson fanned three in her lone inning of work.
The Knights (14-6, 7-5) play host to Albemarle in the first round of the Tarheel Independent Conference tournament today. The game, which will be played at Washington’s Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex, begins at 4 p.m. (WDN)
Wilkins to be honored
Damien Wilkins, a Washington native, is playing with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wilkins will be honored in Washington on June 19. Instead of Wilkins holding his annual basketball camp and Fun Day, the city can help thank Wilkins for all his hard work and dedication.
Live entertainment involving a step team, mime dance, soloists, gospel rapper and more will be held throughout the evening.
Tickets for those 16 years and older are $15. Tickets for those 5-15 are $9. Children 4 and under eat free.

Racquet Club sessions set
Washington Racquet Club will begin a new session of clinics for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced junior players (ages 8-18). Clinics will be on Tuesday and Thursdays. This new session begins May 4 and runs through June 8.
WRC will begin the summer junior programs the week of June 14. These programs are open to members and non-members of the racquet club.

Memorial tourney held at RCC
The Robersonville Country Club held its first annual “memorial” tournament April 24-25. Seventeen teams played in the name of a deceased friend or loved one who once held membership at the club. Many of the honored were founders of the club.
Winners of the event: David Vanderford and Brett Pritchard in championship flight; Jim Rogers and Danny Todd in first flight; JB Bryant and Mark Bryant in second flight; David Vanderford, Tim Smith, JB Bryant, Stephen James and Charles Rogerson for closest to the pin; and Kathy Mellette and David Vanderford for longest drive.
Memorial donations and plaques were made in the names of Johnnie Ross, George Edmondson, RB Lee, Wimpy Thigpin, Wayne Carlisle, Cecil Whitehurst, CL Keel, NC Hyman, James, Ralph and Walter Keel, Roy Vanderford, Robert and George James, Howard Vanderford, Elbert Perry, Paul Woodworth, George McRorie, Billy Roebuck, Delmus Williams and Dayton Bryant. Plaques will be placed in a new memorial garden adjacent to hole No. 3 green.
