Public invited to BCSO forum

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session at 5 p.m. Monday in the Beaufort County Board of Commissioners chambers at 121 W. Third St., Washington.

A news release from the sheriff’s office stated that the forum is part of an onsite review of the agency conducted by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc., that will examine all aspects of the sheriff’s office policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. Comments should address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards, copies of which are available at the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, 210 N. Market St., Washington. For more information, call the sheriff’s office at 252-946-7111.

According to Maj. Kenneth Watson of the sheriff’s office, the assessors, Chief Michael Dickey of the Fairfield, Ohio, police department, and Capt. William Dean of the Virginia Beach, Va., police department, will objectively verify whether the sheriff’s office meets the 383 applicable standards necessary to achieve accreditation, then report back to the CALEA commission that will make the final decision to award continued accreditation.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has maintained accreditation, a status recognizing law enforcement professional excellence, since 2006. It is a voluntary process that is reassessed every three years.

If an individual cannot attend the public information session Monday but would like to comment, he or she may call 252-943-4631 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. today.

Information on CALEA may be obtained on the organization’s website, www.calea.org.
