Mrs. Muriel Frances Gee Roy, age 83, of River Bend Apartments, River Road, Washington, died on Thursday, May 13, 2010.
She was a retired employee of the N.C. Department of Environmental and Natural Resources and an active member of Mother of Mercy Church where she was a past Eucharistic minister and a member of the Parish Council.
Muriel was a former long-time member of the Beaufort County Hospital Volunteer's Association and was involved in the Angel Program with the Beaufort County Schools. She was a certified literacy volunteer and was also formerly a mentor in GED classes at Beaufort County Community College. She enjoyed family, friends, bowling and reading. Favorite times were spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a native of Corning, N.Y., and the daughter of the late Harry Edwin Gee and Pauline B. Gee. The family moved to Portland, Maine, during her childhood. She attended the University of Maine in Orono and was graduated from Nasson College in Springvale, Maine. She had been a resident of Washington since 1955 and loved living near the river and the beach.
She married Gerard A. Roy in 1948. He died in a plane crash on March 20, 1964. A son, Martin Peter Roy, preceded her in death on December 18, 1994.
Muriel is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. David Howdy (Julie) of Washington; a son and daughter-in-law, David Roy and his wife Brenda of Gallatin, Tn.; a sister, Barbara Chellis of Cape Elizabeth, Me; four grandchildren, David Roy, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Cordova, Tn., Wendy Roy Cram and husband Christian, of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer Howdy and Kati Howdy; three great-grandchildren; Katelynn Roy, Taylor Roy and Evan Cram.
A Memorial Mass in Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Mother of Mercy Catholic Church officiated by Father M. Arturo Cabra. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. David Howdy, at 943 Swan Point Reef Road in Washington on Friday, May 14, 2010 from 5 until 7 p.m.
